Flexible Transport Services (FTS) have proved to be an advantageous solution in integrating and complementing the provision of conventional public transport services in order to reduce pollution and congestion whilst increasing the social cohesion and encouraging sustainable economic growth especially in urban and metropolitan areas.

Influence of temporal variation of traffic volume and composition on air quality in urban areas

The aim of this paper is to investigate the influence of the traffic temporal evolution on the air pollution in urban areas using the city of Thessaloniki as a case study. Data from traffic counts were used and include traffic volume and composition in main roads and intersections of the Thessaloniki city centre.

The present work investigates the major environmental problem of air pollution that more or less occurs in the cities, based on publics’ perception. A case study was carried out in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece, in order to present and evaluate the publics’ attitude on air pollution levels in the city.

Large urban conurbations are suffered from huge traffic due to extensive use of private cars that degrade the quality of life (air pollution, exposure to dangerous pollutant concentrations of both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic substances, noise pollution, lost traveling time in the cars due to traffic congestion and a consequent number of health problems such as backbone and back affections, nervous breakdown, blood pressure increase, etc.). Congested roads are significant sources of air pollutants.

This paper describes briefly the methodology adopted for carrying out life cycle costing and environmental impact and energy consumption for different transportation pavements used and proposed in the ‘Ecolanes’ project. EcoLanes is an FP6 STREP project, funded under the priority thematic area of Sustainable Surface Transport, FP6-2005-Transport-4 call 3B. The project develops infrastructure for surface transport using slip forming and roller compaction techniques based on existing asphalt laying equipment and steel fibre reinforced concrete.

Within the framework of this paper, the traffic, environmental and energy impact of transport demand management (TDM) strategies introduced in urban central areas in order to promote sustainable mobility is examined and evaluated through the use of traffic simulation modeling techniques.

SUMMARY: Solar and solar assisted dryers for sewage sludge have shown to be an interesting and commercially viable alternative compared to other known drying processes. A cost-efficient mixing and transporting robot for processing and handling of biomass and biogenous residuals during a solar drying process was developed.
