Europeâs Air Becomes More and More Expensive: The Integration of Maritime Transport into the European Emission Trading Scheme© Lexxion Verlagsgesellschaft mbH (8/2012)
Across the Top of the World? Emerging Arctic Navigational Opportunities and Arctic Governance© Lexxion Verlagsgesellschaft mbH (12/2009)
The Arctic Ocean has witnessed dramatic thinning and melting of sea ice cover as a consequence of climate change in recent years. This has led to increasing access to and thus activities in the Arctic region, including with regard to shipping. Arctic navigational opportunities are examined and it is concluded that there are a number of major obstacles to Arctic routes transforming the pathways of global trade, at least in the immediate future. The likely future opening up of Arctic sea lanes does, however, provide a focal point for increasing external interest in the region and for changes in oceans governance.
Environmentally focused production and distribution supply chain network structures© Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (6/2009)
Enterprise optimisation can rapidly strip significant âbottom lineâ costs out ofglobal operations, giving companies a real competitive edge. Traditionally, the main objective of such optimisation models and methods has been to maximise the financial benefits by integrating operational, design and cost decisions. Over the last decade there has been a growing concern for the environmental impact of design and operational decisions.
Publicsâ attitude on air pollution in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece© Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (6/2009)
The present work investigates the major environmental problem of air pollution that more or less occurs in the cities, based on publicsâ perception. A case study was carried out in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece, in order to present and evaluate the publicsâ attitude on air pollution levels in the city.
Intra-hourly variations of CO concentrations in Thessaloniki during the rush hours© Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (6/2009)
Large urban conurbations are suffered from huge traffic due to extensive use of private cars that degrade the quality of life (air pollution, exposure to dangerous pollutant concentrations of both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic substances, noise pollution, lost traveling time in the cars due to traffic congestion and a consequent number of health problems such as backbone and back affections, nervous breakdown, blood pressure increase, etc.). Congested roads are significant sources of air pollutants.
Life Cycle costing of a new transportation pavement constructed in the Paphos District area in Cyprus as a pilot study of the âECOLANESâ project © Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (6/2009)
This paper describes briefly the methodology adopted for carrying out life cycle costing and environmental impact and energy consumption for different transportation pavements used and proposed in the âEcolanesâ project. EcoLanes is an FP6 STREP project, funded under the priority thematic area of Sustainable Surface Transport, FP6-2005-Transport-4 call 3B. The project develops infrastructure for surface transport using slip forming and roller compaction techniques based on existing asphalt laying equipment and steel fibre reinforced concrete.
